Panhellenic Psychological Association: Representing Licensed Psychologists to the Greek Authorities that create and regulate policies regarding Psychologists and Psychology.

The Panhellenic Psychological Association was founded on February 21st 1998, by 36 Psychologists. Today its membership has grown to 1.704 licensed members [5th of April, 2014].

  • The psychologist’s profession is protected by laws concerning the practice of the psychological profession in Greece [Law: 991/1979 (FEΚ 278/vol. Α΄/20-12-1979)]. Regardless of this fact, due to the Greek legal system idiosyncrasies, any non-licensed person, without possessing any and/or adequate academic titles, can be self-proclaimed as a “therapist” or “counselor”. This is one of the main objectives of the Panhellenic Psychological Association: the establishment of a Public Legal Entity for creation and enforcement of laws for practicing Psychologists, that will disallow the foundation of other (illegal) psychological associations, and for creating an official record of all professionals who are entitled to be licensed as psychologists and, thus, to make use of the title ''psychologist''. Additionally, as such a Public Legal Entity, the PPsyA will construct a code of ethics for psychologists, which, at the present time, does not exist in Greece.

  • Protection of the financial, social, professional, and scientific rights and interests of all the professionals who are “Licensed Psychologists” in Greece.

  • Representation of all Licensed Psychologists in the Authorities that conduct the policies for psychologists and Psychology.

  • Aggregation, cooperation and solidarity of psychologists, and assertion of proper occupational posts.

  • Betterment, support and protection of the professional mission of psychologists –theoretical and practical-, development of Psychological science.

  • Protection of Greek cultural heritage within the scope of psychology.

  • Increase of public awareness regarding the methods and code of ethics, as they relate to psychologists’ profession and practice.

  • Preservation of advanced study levels within the Psychology Faculties of Greek Universities and Universities abroad.

  • Means of accomplishing the above aims

  • Subscription, as members, of all Licensed Psychologists.

  • Interdisciplinary cooperations with other scientific groups.

  • Promotion, defense and advancement of psychologists’ rights.

  • Defense and improvement of the existing legal framework for psychologists.

  • Protection of the psychologists’ occupational activities. As a guide for this, we use the International Labour Organization’s definition for the profession of psychologists.

  • Informing the public about the psychological sciences.

  • Cooperation with academic boards of psychologists in Greece.

  • Establishing contacts with international associations of psychologists.

  • Participation in negotiation forums with political representatives, for the application of labour agreements about salaries and terms of employment, and taxation polices as well.
